The Teachings of the Buddha about Relational Suffering
The Nature of the World
The “world is established on dukkha”: “Dukkhe loko patitthito.”1 The word “dukkha” refers to the main concept in the Buddha’s explanation of the world. So, what is dukkha? Many would translate this word as “suffering,” which is a partial meaning of the word. Another English translation found in literature for dukkha is “dissatisfactory condition.” That is, the world is based on dissatisfactory conditions.
